Introducing GarmentWorks!

GarmentWorks is a school Heather Habig and I founded to teach the techniques needed to design, draft and sew garments that work. Having taught for a combined 20 years, we are ready to teach patternmaking in a new way. GarmentWorks students are taught techniques to create patterns of their own design, not just how to recreate designs. Students will walk away with an understanding of what measurements are needed, where to use them, and how they work within the pattern to create successful clothing designs. We share with you all the best we have learned from our experience as teachers and patternmakers, all the books scoured, all the blogs read, the best of online tutorials, and anywhere else we have acquired knowledge.

At GarmentWorks all body shapes and genders are welcome in all classes. Our coursework is not gender specific, students learn to design and control fit for every body. Learning to fit is a major component of successful patternmaking, and the development of this skill is honed in our classes.

Classes are a la carte, meaning you can take them in any order. Patterns are developed and fit in the Patternmaking class series and sewn in final fabric during the corresponding Sewing class series.

The schedule is organized so that the appropriate Sewing class is offered the quarter after Patternmaking. We are on a 10-week quarterly schedule, and meet weekly for 1.5 or 2 hours - see each class description for exact timing. Classes are a combination of instructor demonstration and lecture with student in-class work time with instructor oversight.

Registration for our classes being offered in April is about to go online. Learn more about what we are up to here. In the meantime, let us tell you a little bit about GarmentWorks. If you would like to hear about new class offerings please join our mailing list by following this link

We hope to see you in class at GarmentWorks! And please sign up for our mailing list to continue to hear from us.

For the love of patternmaking,

Swimwear I has begun

I have a new class in the making! Nervous and excited about Swimwear I at Apparel Arts. In the class we will cover three basic swimwear styles. Students will learn pattern drafting techniques for a one piece bathing suit with shelf bra, a string bikini with foam inserts and a structured bikini top with underwire. Construction methods for each style will be
taught. The course will also include fabric and finding choices, a brief serger review, and alternate drafting and construction methods specific to men's swimwear. Photos of samples for class to be posted soon.
